I have always been a fan of the various bastard genres of hip-hop, particularly those that tickle my geek. Over the last couple of years I’ve been following the career of Leslie Hall who has created her own fusion of comedy hip hop and nerdcore. She’s the sassy, mid-west internet sensation of your Goodwill dreams.

A few days ago I went to see Leslie Hall and the fabulous LYs in concert at the Larimer Lounge in Denver, CO. It was a few different kinds of epic. Especially those kids of epic that include BEDAZZLERS. Admittedly, I had to Google Bedazzler for the proper spelling perhaps removing any chance of pretending I own one. However, I will have you know…that night, my heart swelled with the love of plastic gemstones and I may never craft the same again.

For those unfamiliar with the lady in question let me share a few facts with you about the SLASH Jam Master…

• Leslie Hall makes Etsy look like amateur hour at Hobby Lobby.
• Do you have dreams of pig petting and air riffles at your wedding? She will plan that ish.
• She is the keeper of the Gem Sweater Museum. Which is a glorious display of Midwest, acrylic, gemstone flair.

Opening that night for Leslie Hall and the fabulous LYs was Christopher the Conquered, another group coming highly recommended this week. Christopher himself signed a CD for me and gave this post some Janis Joplin relevancy which it has been lacking…not that Janis didn’t like tight/shiny things…she was just intimately opposed to, dare I say, gem sweaters. Just saying. The Janis-Leslie connection is hard to make. But If you insist I will make an attempt.

Back to Christopher the Conquered. I was never quite sure whether Christopher came onto the stage raiding and colonizing us with his music or if Christopher had himself previously been raided and colonized and that is why he was conquered. He did not share this information with us and where colonization is involved I tend to lay low. So I just danced respectfully near the stage…all night long.

Dun Dun Dun.

It’s filled with concert posters, magazines, tickets to shows, clothing, books, artist buttons and on and on and on. I’m back at the vault this week for a few reasons the most important of which is to escape the Denver chill. Not that the desert is entirely warm, it’s just er, it’s warm-er. Good enough for me. Another being that my uncle’s personal trainer has an uncanny ability to have me lift weights, not feel like I’ve done anything, and then spend the next week saturated in pain and slowly lowering myself into any seated position.

Now that I’ve thawed out and am struggling to move, I’m deep into the memorabilia. My favorite pieces here are the old magazines. I could flip through them for HOURS. The Playboys are so innocent and full of REAL, curvy, beautiful women. The ads are insensitive/ridiculous/full-of-awesome. I’ve found articles about creating magic spells to get your man (it included a live insect) as well as a ten page exploration of contraception complete with photographs of all choices and the sentence: “Sex is no longer supposed to be a chore for making babies, today it’s a way of life.” (Confidential Magazine – 1970) I’m not sure that is entirely accurate, but I can think of a few demographics that would like it to be–like teenage boys…likely teenage girls too.

Well, these magazine are far too good for me to keep to myself so it’s time for post-and-tell…

This is my favorite Janis Joplin cover. It’s from January 1975. Perhaps not the most flattering picture, but it’s real! You just can feel her movement.

Remember when I said full-of-awesome? Looking at it reminds me of the new manmercials from Old Spice.  Playboy — October 1969.

Janis was on the Dick Cavett show quite a few times, this is one of my favorite videos from those appearances.  There are a lot of performance videos out there and there are a lot of interviews, but not much unique material.  This is Janis, with the improvisational group The Committee performing a piece called the “Symphony of Emotions” featuring the likes of Dick himself, Gary Goodrow, Jessica Myerson, a young Howard Hessmen (aka Don Sturdy) and more.

Note: In true “we’re just getting used to you people”, 60’s fashion, there is but ONE person of color on stage.

Anyone else find it curious that current suburban-mainstream television’s definition of “diversity” often just means black?

Gorgeous.  Wonderful interpretation.  I get pretty sick of tie dye and mushrooms and peace signs and the like that many people still see as the ONLY lens through which to see Janis. The woman who created this blows my mind…Just about anything you can imagine to represent Janis is on this guitar: song lyrics, photos, a Mercedes Benz hood ornament, an autograph, Southern Comfort label, a piece of brick from the Joplin’s childhood home…holy crap you should see the list of stuff the woman used.  I’m, uh—, I’m impressed.  That’s a feat of true passion. These are Scrabble tile earrings.  This seller also creates necklaces with said tiles.  I am particularly partial to the fact that the store name is “Pretentious Jewelry”.  There are quotes from Einstein, Ayn Rand, Lincoln, some other important famous women from history I can’t necessarily name, but were queens and pilots and the like. Let me introduce you to Tanya Tagaq Gillis, a contemporary Inuit throat singer.  She creates fire, sex, pleasure, longing, want, need…all within the constraints of her throat.  It’s primal and electric. It’s honest and almost meditative. Through her collaborations with artists like Bjork and the Kronos Quartet she’s bringing new flavor to a centuries old tradition. She’s kind of my new “main squeeze” in music right now.
