I’ll expedite this process by filling out the 5 W’s and you can jump to what you actually care about…which is obviously the “Who” section because it’s got freaking awesome photos.
Who:
My name is Claire. I live in Denver, CO. I’m one of Janis’ nieces. Besides that I’m pretty much a Regular Weird Person.
I was once a child:
I have a fascination and fear of large garden vegetables:
I’m a complete internet whore (in the nerdiest way possible), I love pop culture and I’ve traveled all over the world.
I am a student of literature – like books and words and stuff:
Lolita (Dirty!)
The Third Policeman (Once featured on LOST. I may or may not have seen every episode…)
Where the Sidewalk Ends (Let’s hug it out!)
Everything is Illuminated (OMG…Jonathan Safran Foer is my literary boyfriend)
Also a student of journalism and international studies:
I <3 the developing world (Like a lot of hearting)
I also pretend to read books a lot more than I do in real life.
Quirks:
In college I hosted an internet radio show where I played underground hip-hop & reported unusual news
I once had to bribe my way on a flight out of Kenya
I have a true weakness for earrings…silver, plastic, leather, anything. Love it.
…I sometimes make up words, have a ghastly use of punctuation (and clearly overuse ellipses)
What:
So this space is for all things Janis related: new, old and otherwise. I’m interested in including reader submissions and would love to see/hear/read how Janis pops up in your life. Send me photos, video or writing!
Show me your creations, shrines, favorite posters
Dress up, sing a song…dress up your dog?
Pretty much anything goes here…Clarification: anything PG-13 and under…negotiable.
Example: Infancy + Janis Joplin covers = awesome
Where:
That is the most irrelevant question ever…
When:
Also completely irrelevant…
Why:
Over the last eight months I’ve spent time on and off cataloging Janis’ memorabilia and photographs. It’s been such an interesting and inspiring project which has brought me a lot closer to this woman that I have never met, but at the same time is such an important part of my life. Janis is a part of my family, but she’s also an icon and I’ve enjoyed seeing how her power has manifested itself. I want to get in touch with the rest of Janis’ world and create a new space for her iconacism to live on in the digital age.
This is a place where I hope you and I can learn more about Janis through the legacy that she’s left us.
