Happy Birthday Janis!

Today she would have been a ripe 67. Born on January 19th, 1943, she is a Capricorn. As am I. Which means we are cooler than you. Did I mention we are also partial to egotism?

I’m about to get all astrological on your ass. I own a book called The Secret Language of Birthdays. It has what it calls a “personology” guide with specific characteristics influenced by sun sign, season and day of the year. Which really means I have astro-stalked all of my exes…

HA! This book knows he was a cold hearted bastard too. It even knows he was an insensitive, smothering child…It also knows that I’m bossy, hypocritical and closed, but, really, who’s looking at details?

Let’s talk about INK

Of all the irresponsible, bad decisions I’ve ever made, getting a tattoo is probably the best. I admit my friend had to physically push me into the chair when I tried to escape and there are times I think…maybe I’ll regret that…but for the most part it makes me feel just a little bit more bad ass. Mind you my tattoo takes up about one square inch on the front of my shoulder and is the outline of Africa so it took all of one minute to complete. I am a wimp. Wimpius Maximus I believe is the technical Latin term.

Enough about my lame body art choices.

Janis was one of the original tattooed women. That’s not to say she was the first woman anywhere to get body art. There are cultures that have been practicing forms of body decoration for centuries. However, Janis got tattooed when it was still considered extremely rebellious, loose and low brow in Western cultures. Now a tattoo with a side of woman known as Kat Von D has her own TV show. We are obviously more comfortable with it.

I thought I’d take a moment to show off some fan tattoos. Apparently you people feel strongly enough about Janis to have pieces of her permanently etch-a-sketched into your bodies with needles. That’s dedication. I like it.

James Gurley…

I was saddened to hear of the passing of James Gurley on Sunday evening. He was just two days from his 70th birthday.

Despite the sorrow that surrounds his passing, I’d like to remember the tremendous and full life that James led. He was a wonderfully accomplished musician who was ever evolving and explored many different types of music throughout the years. He found fame with Big Brother and the Holding Co., but he found joy far beyond the band.

So take a minute out of your day to remember James. Remember his piece of history, his contribution to this intangible feeling we call the 60’s and the magic of Big Brother. Also take a minute to revel in the plethora of guitars he is playing somewhere now…They sound fucking fantastic.

Rest In Peace James Gurley.

Peace Jam’s FUCKING Awesome Peace Fueling Acoustics…

A good friend of mine works for PeaceJam, an international education program that brings the knowledge of Nobel Peace Laureates to youth around the world. I pretty much piss excellence, joy and beauty when I am around them.

“Piss” is not a word they employ with any regularity at PeaceJam. However, I do.

A couple of years ago I participated as a mentor in a PeaceJam Slam which brought together youth from all over the mountain region to Denver for a day of awesome discussions, awesome lectures, awesome goal planning and an awesome speech by Naomi Tutu (daughter of the awesome Desmond Tutu) who inspired us to be even more awesome than we felt in our awesome glands. I was blown away by how involved PeaceJam had made these students. They were, by themselves, creating all types of programs in their schools, neighborhoods and cities from picking up trash to raising money for African NGO’s. They were taking on huge projects and accomplishing deliverable goals. I very much enjoyed encouraging their continued awesomeness…and wanted to be more like them! Well, PeaceJam is currently auctioning off a series of acoustic guitars EACH signed by 10, TEN Nobel Peace Laureates on EBAY! These include:

Now THOSE are some sounds I can get behind. I’m fairly certain that we can all support peace, love and music on this blog so get in on this bit of Nobel history and OWN it. It’s not every day that the Dalai Lama signs a guitar. It’s currently unknown what great powers these guitars can bring you, but me thinks they involve the powers of diplomacy, mediation and the famous and funky “peace” booty shake.

Cleveland RECAP!

So I missed most of the weeks festivities due to my 8-5, but I did get to spend a great weekend with my family and our managers in Cleveland. Here’s a kind of “behind the scenes” of what happened during the weekend. It was so special to see so many of Janis’ friends together as well as so many of her fans.

Brief recap: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is honoring Janis as their American Music Master of 2009!

FRIDAY

Landed in Cleveland at 10pm…driver took me to the hotel. Kept unabashedly asking me about my husband/boyfriend (neither of which exist outside of my head). So that was awkward.

Got to the hotel hugs for mom, uncle and managers, younger cousin was asleep: lame. Missed all of the events of the day, but showed up just in time for a meeting so I felt good about that. We talked about all kinds of awesome secret things that will sometime not be secrets and I can talk about them unsecretly.

Went to hotel room to find guitars made out of chocolate filled with more chocolates. OMG. Joy!

So, this link is about people spending the night in the room where Janis died. I can appreciate peoples need to understand Janis death and one way people do that is by finding a way to personally connect to it. However, the way that people talk about this is like death stalking…it’s creepy. However, I suppose I spent a Christmas in Rwanda studying the genocide and touring various places where mass murder had been committed. Maybe we aren’t so different…connoisseurs of death.

American Music Master – Like a Black Belt in Rock…

Well this week marks a very special one in the life Janis Joplin fans. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is honoring Janis as their 2009 American Music Master! My mom is already in Cleveland…takin’ care o’ business. My uncle Mike will be there with my awesome cousin Melanie tomorrow and my sad 8-5 working body won’t fly in till Friday. Better to be there for something than nothing, right?

I miss the days when mom could call up your school, say you weren’t coming in for a couple days, and no one asked questions. Maybe you had to write a one page paper or something, but it didn’t influence your ability to pay rent. You didn’t even know what rent was. Not that my mom would ever have called in for me. Boo false memories of reality!

Back to more relevant conversation…
So most of the Joplin family will be united in Cleaveland and will undoubtedly have adventures worth taking about…I have my mom sending me her current updates. This is her Tuesday update:

“I had popcorn with vinegar as an appetizer at a restaurant.”

Poor combination choice, restaurant. Poor combination choice.

I’ll be updating this with anything interesting and worth talking about.
